Chef John Flora: From Humble Beginnings to Culinary Success Born into a poor family of tailors in Bari, Italy, John Flora followed his dreams to America, arriving in the United States on December 17, 1962, with little more than the clothes on his back and no knowledge of English. He settled in the predominantly Italian neighborhood of Bensonhurst in Brooklyn, New York, where authentic Italian food was an everyday part of life. It was here, working at the renowned Villa Cucci Italian Bakery, that Flora's career in the food industry began, although he did not realize it at the time.

The Birth of Flora's Businesses While vacationing in Miami Beach, John Flora realized that he could not find an authentic pizza anywhere. This realization inspired him to open Flora's Drive-In pizza parlor in 1972. Later, he expanded his culinary ventures, opening Flora's Italian Restaurant and sourcing ingredients directly from Italy. As other restaurants began inquiring about acquiring the same high-quality Italian ingredients, John Flora saw an opportunity and launched his restaurant supply business.
